The boat I was in was able to get very close to this bird. Taken on the Zambezi River in Zambia with a Nikon D-500 and 80-400 lens at 1/2500, f/8 and ISO 720. Cropped to about 80% of the original. Richard

He is beautiful, and you did a great job capturing him, Richard.  The details and colors are really exceptional.

Yes, excellent light, superb pose, and a pretty fine background for the most part.  The detail and composition are really good.  I might fool around with a tilt shift and slightly blur the background a little more especially on the far right.  I think what I would do would be bring the level of focus in line with what is behind the point of the beak to get some uniformity in the background because the thick reeds are a little bit of an eye magnet.

Excellent detail and exposure, Richard.  A beautiful bird and I like the dof with the reeds suggested but not distracting.

No nits for me here, almost. Believe it or not, the reed behind the perch bothers me. Make it go away and this is over the top for me. The other reeds act to balance the picture and are OOF enough not to be distracting.cool

Keith: here's a version with the yellow reed removed. Might not be the neatest as I'm working left handed due to shoulder surgery. Richard

Great look at this colorful kingfisher, Richard. The environment included in the image adds a lot without distracting from the subject. The light is exceptional too. I like the repost better for the amount of space around, but like the composition in the original version. If I look closely, I see some slight artifacts in the repost where you have removed the reed in the back.

Lovely little Kingfisher, well captured ! I do like the repost a little more, since it has a little more space around the bird, the light reed could have been as in the original image.. So many people, so many preferences I guess sad. That said, I would be more than happy would it be my shot ! Congrats, Hans

Hello Richard,.. Well captured & agree with most about the sharpness etc. I do not like to clone . but work around the problem areas more to establish the very best without clone.  So, for me the original is superb ! :)

Cheers
