Bed & Breakfast

This morning was cool and damp so I decided to venture into the prairie to look for photo subjects.  Prairie dock is beginning to bloom and I snipped off one of the flowers from the 7 foot tall stalk.  I examined the flower for quality and noticed a small bumblebee snoozing on the flower.  I carefully walked back to the house and taped the flower stem to a beer bottle and placed it in the light tent with with a black background.  I used 2 flashes to add some detail to the shadows.  The bumblebee slept through the ordeal and has flown away. K5 IIs 180 mm f3.5 (1.3 sec at f22, ISO 160 fill flashes set at 1/32 and 1/8 power.

Jim, this is so very fine!   The flower almost looks like a bright windmill.devil

Looks great, Jim.  Terrific details in the flower and the bee and the black background sure lets the subjects pop.  Interesting place to overnight, guess it didn't want to put out any effort to find breakfast.  (Yes, I can relate to that...)

What a neat story, Jim, and an excellent capture.  Worth all the effort.  That black background really makes the yellow flower pop.
