Snowy in the Calm
by Bill Leggett
The east side of Gulfport harbor has lately been a popular hangout for these guys, up to 6-8 individuals have been around at any given time when fishing conditions are good, which is of course great for photography, and their animated feeding habits are always fun to watch. I often avoid shooting from behind, but I liked how these turned out. This was a tough call in terms of exposure, as typically I shoot white birds at -1/3 to -1 EV, but in this case I overexposed. The "butt shot" may not be the popular pose, but for me it's one of the more attractive angles. I liked the calm water and open comp, as well as the posture of the legs. Parts of the back look a bit blown but for me it didn't distract. Full frame after slight tilt correction.
