I like the pose, standing on the rock.  Good detail.  You might see what you think with the background darker-to my eye there seems to be too much of a similar tone between the quail, the rocks, and the background.

Very nice shot, Sandy!  I love the background, so soft, making the quail stand out.  Great details in the quail and the rocks.  I think the colors compliment the quail, but that is me.

I like the sharpness of the quail. . I like the out of focus bg.  I feel the bg and fg needs some darkiening.  I think this would make the quiail stand-out.

Nice subject and composition. I don't mind the close colors - that's nature's way of helping the bird blend in. I don't think you need to  make the BG or FG darker than the quail, but you might want to go darker overall.

Very pleasant habitat image of the quail. I like the colors as presented, especially the background. Not sure if this full frame, but I think a slightly different comp with the quail a tad more left will enhance this image.

Lovely background and setting here Sandy, I would crop some from the left to move him out of the center. devil

Do all you guys really see this as "centered"???  To me, only the very tip of the beak and plume are on the right side of a center line. That leaves the entire body well left of center. Just asking, since people regularly think some of my images are too centered.  Sandy

Yes, I would categorize this as centered. I think it would be a stronger composition and image with about half of the "empty" space on the left cropped off. When viewing the image my attention goes to the face of the quail, and the nice rocks in front of it. I only look at the left side if I linger on the image, and when I do I'm pulled tot he bottom left corner where the rocks are darker.

But composition is subjective and the "rules" are only guidelines, and the photographer should make the choices that are personally satisfying and feel right.

Hi Sandy
I am not going to get into the centering of this photo, over all it is a really nice shot of a California Quail.  Nice work.

I never could understand why "centering" is such a big deal.  If you off center an image ,then you are critized for too much room on the left or right.   As a member of a local Camera Club competition., I'm often "dinged: becasue the image is centered or when not centered dinged because of too much space on either side.  If I show the same image to a differnt camera club competion I get different results. Judging is pure objective.  At times it is very frustrating.

Hi Sandy.  A very nice shot of the quail.  I like the bg color and brightness-any dimmer wouldn't be right for the high desert.  I do think a bit off the left would be nice.  While most of the quail may be left of center, it still "looks" pretty centered to my eye.  I think I'd draw a diagonal from the top of hte quail's head across that foreground rock to our left ofit and down until it intersected the bottom and make that my lower left corner.
