Thank you so much for your comments and observations on my previous post!  Very keen and appreciated.

Another bit of an abstract, although I'm giving it away in the title. ;-)  I've photographed and posted here before some  years back and wanted to see how this old weathered Western Juniper was holding up.  Holding up well, but what I photographed some 6 or 8 years ago is not quite the same.  But I was happy see it still worth photographing, especially since I had to scramble up this granite slab to find this again.

Just like my lodgepole image, this only works when the sun is behind the old tree, lighting up other side, the inside. I did have a reflector, but it had little effect due to angles and the small space to work with on the other side.

This is a 3 image stack for depth, although after running through the stacking, PS really only used 2 of the 3 layers.  My first pass in processing rendered the light in the crack as too red and unnatural; so I reprocessed trying to keep this more real.  The outside of the weathered juniper facing me was of course in the shade, slightly cooler, while the inside where the sun was striking had muted yellows and reds.

Anyway, your thoughts and critiques on this one are appreciated!

Lon

You captured the lovely patina of this old juniper perfectly Lon.  Wonderful bark abstract.  Love the texture and subtle color shifts and of course, the color of the split.  Excellent.

Real nice intimate bark portrait. I like the colors, lines and textures. Works quite well.

I'm not sure about this one, Lon. It's a fine image but the previous one was so much stronger. I don't know if it's just me but the sunny area looks like crack in the wood that's exposed in a single tree. I suppose it doesn't really matter what it is.

Nicely balanced image, Lon.  Comps like this can be difficult (for me), but when they work, they work.

I really like the composition, Lon. The reds are highlighted nicely. I do think the wood on either side of the red streak is a little low in contrast--but not by much. The detail is excellent. Good eye to see this.

The large version is a must to really enjoy all of the lines and details of the weathered bark of this juniper, Lon. Looks like you and Preston have captured the essence of this tree for the rest of us to enjoy. I particularly like the warm light in the split. Great work on this.
