I captured this at the Cheyenne Bottoms in Kansas.
I would like to know if the composition is OK.
Am I using a comp that is considered a No No?
1/400sec
f/7.1
ISO 800
600mm

Hi Scott.  I don't know of any comps considered no-nos though this feels just a bit tight on the top to me.  I like the way you cropped the egret and its pose and the bg is beautiful.  You also did a great job on the exposure of the white bird.

Nice close-up look.  You have a nice, clean background and I like how it matches the colors around the egret's eyes.

I had the same thoughts as Allen.  I am basically ok on the crop although I could see a tiny bit more on the top.  One thing that is rarely touched upon in this gallery is originality and this composition has been done before many times.  It may be pleasing  but it isn' new.  Neither are most of the BOAS (bird on a stick) images that I post.  I think it would be worthy on these pages to discuss originality in avian photography.  There are of course risks to being different as you saw with the recently posted image by Richard Ditch.  But it should be done.  One thing though; on sites such as 500 px where non experts "like" your bird photos, the classic old unoriginal compositions seem to do the best.

Hi all. Thanks for the critique.
Thanks for pointing out the color of the eyes/background. Since I didn't need to adjust any color, I hadn't given it much thought.

As for the old worn out composition.....I thought that it may be disliked by some but wasn't sure.  I am now going to challenge myself to think more out of the box with my work.
I've only been doing photography for 6 months and am not aware of what everyone has done over the years.
Compared to when I picked up the camera in March, I think the knowledge I have gained from the critiques is evident.
For the past 6 months, I have been struggling to get familiar with the camera and get a clean shot as seen here.

well done controlling the whites, I like the pose. Cheyenne Bottoms is a great place for bird photography. I don't post much here anymore, but it is nice to see a photo from the Bottoms on this great site.
