Boulders & Buckwheat

I enjoyed the challenge of finding a composition out of all the natural chaos around me. I went a little wide so I could crop down a bit (about 20% from the left side). The wildness and diversity of plant material in the Santa Ana Mountains habitat is striking. The patchiness of colors and the range of soft shapes held me in this area for a while. I was disappointed with the image until I started to “soften” the colors and played with the shadows and highlights. All processing in Lightroom. Hope you like it. Thanks for looking.

I think it's gorgeous and the softness of form and colour comes across beautifully and naturally in a composition which is simple and elegant without the appearance of being "over composed", if that makes sense.

A lovely intimate portrait of nature -- something that is easily overlooked by most everyone except an artist with sensitive eyes. Love the softness of color and contrast.

Real sweet. It looks like a Lon Overacker and that is a nice compliment. :) You have very nicely composed a lovely image from a very chaotic scene.

Stephen,

Don't know that I would have seen this... but I do know that I LOVE this!  It is most often very difficult to pull order out of chaos and create such a simple scene with such beauty... and you've done that here.  Terrific job in processing this and thanks for including the notes like softening the colors and paying attention to shadows and highlights.  Well done!

I have have one minor nit, or maybe just an eye grabber. There is a notch of some sorts in the secondary rock I wish wasn't there. Yeah, really nitpicky, but thought I would mention it.  Oh, and I also wish for a larger view!  ;-)

Beautifully seen, captured and presented.

Lon

Thanks Mr. H.!

I am going to ditto all the remarks already given. I really like this.  The colors are beautiful and the two rocks give an anchor and point of intrest in the image. Very well photographed.

Beautiful work. A nice combination of elements that subtly go well together. We have these type of habitat in SoCal so I'm fairly familiar with it. My first thought was a small crop from the top to about the top of the dry yellow reeds but I'm not sure now. Great job  of showing the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Lovely detail and warm color. The reds in the buckwheat contrast nicely with the grasses. The pair of boulders add a nice leading diagonal and interest. The soft light is very pleasing.

As everyone has already mentioned, the fact that you found a coherent composition here is a real accomplishment.  Your description shows us another accomplishment.  Your work with highlights and shadows, as well as color creates a lovely, relaxed feel.  The light is directional but not not harsh at all - jusy what we would all wish for; and the colors complement the softness of the light.  It all comes together perfectly.

Nice find and great combination of vegetation and rocks.  Checked out your gallery and we seem to go to a lot of the same placed, specially on the east side.

This is excellent work. Beautiful composition and I love the subject, light, colors and wonderful detail. Something most would walk past by you saw it and made a wonderful fine art photograph.

I love these simple scenes that would normally be ignored.  Good eye for making this work.

I like the mix of subtle colors in the brush against the boulders, and looks like a good choice for the crop. Thanks for sharing.

An outstanding image for me, Stephen. The nicely balanced composition is well anchored by the rocks to my eye, and allows me to explore all the delightful details, always keeping me within the frame. I also appreciate your careful treatment of colors a lot.

If it was mine, I would try a slight vignetting in the upper left corner for balancing tonality with the lower right corner. But this is a minor matter for me, I really enjoy your work on this.
