Pushed to the limits

The rain started yesterday (with the forecast expectation that it will continue for the next 10 days without stopping ) and it has been really dark so I decided to see what the D 500 could really do.  This nuthatch image was taken today at iso-5000 with a shutter speed of 1000th.  Fill flash was used.  I think the image quality is quite reasonable for 60% of full frame.

Iso-5000, 200-500 at 500, F8, 1000th, -0.3 EV, fill flash at zero, D 500, tripod, DxO Optics Prime Elite 11, Topaz Adjust, TK, sharpening action at 50%

Beautiful image.  I like the diagonal perch and the placement of the nuthatch between the two tufts of moss.  Nice detail and pleasing color combination.  ISO 5000.  Impressive.

Excellent composition and simply amazing ISO performance. I can’t see noise and apart from some dark edging on the strands of moss, the IQ is very good.

David, this looks great, especially for ISO 5000. The bird stands out so well against the background, and I always love the moss on your perches. In the larger version, I see some noise only in the darker areas of the background. Maybe some selective blurring might be in order on those areas.

Excellent results, David.  The image quality in the large image is excellent as is the pose.  Did you do noise reduction in the DxO software?

Dennis:  noise reduction  done with DxO software.  As of today, they have not released D850 profiles.  This was shot with D500 which already has camera and lens profiles for the software.  I have been going back and reprocessing some images from before and there is a notable improvement with the DxO software added to the workflow.

This one is very nice--perch, subject, and BG are excellent. ...................Jim

Aside from liking the photo, it is a revelation to me that with the same equipment I am using you come up with an almost noise free image at 5000 ISO. I don't dare go past 1600 for most photos! I just spent the $167 for the software. I sincerely hope I will make the same kind of progress.cool
