The Art of Erosion

Capitol Gorge is always an attraction for me. It's so much fun to drive along the unpaved road and study the forces of nature. To quote Edward Abbey, one can imagine the "liberal allowance of time" it takes for such formations. And the gorge is one place where the walls are virtually devoid of any hand of man, but only through natural forces are the sculptures created. Shot in May 2010, cropped to 85% of original.

E-3 Zuiko 50 F2 on tripod, ISO 100 F5, a slight color balance and exposure adjustment in PS.

More cool sandstone erosion forms!  This is a  good look at the shapes here, Bill.  I see shapes like this and wonder about the chemistry that allows such detailed shapes to form.  A bit of dodging in the lower right corner would help keep the focus on that fine collection of shapes angling down from the upper right.
