Lake George Surprise

One cloudy afternoon last week, some breaks in the clouds began to appear in my neighborhood. After days of yard work and rain, I decided to make a break to a hill on the west side of Lake George (eastern Adirondacks). I calculated that I could drive there and make the hike up the hill in about 90 minutes -- just before sundown. With the south-southwest wind, I was hoping the clouds would be more interesting when I got there. I didn't expect much, but I need the hike. On the way up the hill, the sky was completely gray. At the top, I decided to set up my tripod just to record the autumn leaves under the overcast sky. Before I could even put the camera on the tripod, I was surprised by a burst of bright sunshine over my right shoulder. Behind me, the Sun had dropped into a small break between the clouds and the horizon, and it lit the east shore of the lake with intense, orange light. I was on the edge of a rock ledge, so I had to run up the bank to my backpack to get my polarizer, and run back to the tripod before the light show was over.

P.S. If you are wondering why this is not in the Landscape Gallery, look at the Island left of center. It is dotted with buildings in the village of Bolton Landing, New York.
