Pemi Falls

Here's another image from Franconia Notch State Park in NH. I find this area of the Pemigewassett River fascinating, but sometimes difficult to make an image that I feel does it justice. I'm not sure yet how I feel about this composition, so I am interested to hear all of your opinions. Thanks in advance!

Craig -- What an artistic eye you have! The silkiness of the water set apart from the muted colors and textures of the fall background of trees and leaves. It's a study in contrasts: shades, textures, light. I like it a lot!  Dave

Craig, this is a view that looks to have lots of compositional options.  I like the one you've chosen here, with the right angle bend in the white water with a bit of rock and clear water below.  The touches of color in the upper left add well and are nicely balanced with the trees and rocks in the upper right.

This comp works real well for me.  Nicely balanced and good draw from front to back. Nice!

A great vertical composition with a lot of up and down elements that are balanced for just such a frame. I can see no crop to improve this. If the whites are not clipped I would tease more definition out of those falls as they are pretty monotoned white. Some might want to jack up the colors in such a scene but I like them just fine. You could experiment with opening up the exposure just a bit to see what kind of atmosphere it lends the scene. I like this just fine though.

I think this area makes you want to make an image as you walk by, but getting a great comp is difficult.  I understand your quandary.  The upper right hold a good part of the comp, but isn't the most interesting part you would want to highlight - but option for this cascade are limiting.  Wondering if you made it up to Cloudland Falls across the road?

Craig - I totally agree with you that I always find this location to be fascinating, but I too often find myself a little disappointed with the results I get from this waterfall. As you have presented it here, you have a nice visual flow from left to right, and I like how you use the tree on the right side as frame. Someone else mentioned that the upper right of this image does not hold as much visual interest as the rest of the scene, but you are kind of forced to include the right side to get some balance. After studying your shot, I also think that the tree dead center in the  frame (above the rock to the right of the flow) is too prominent in the composition, and is another reason that I'm often not completely pleased with shots of this waterfall. Of course, it's virtually impossible to avoid this tree and get the full waterfall. I still think this is a nice shot that sweeps your eye around the frame.

You're making feel a bit better about this image, so thank you for that!

Harry, I've been up to Cloudland Falls in the past, but did not make it on this trip. I do want to go there in the fall...Maybe next year!

Very nicely composed, Craig. I'm familiar with this area as well from years ago and can also attest for the areas magical feel. It may very well be an optical illusion judging from that large tree trunk but it seems like it could benefit from a slight clockwise rotation.

This is very nice, Craig.  While it may be difficult to find the perfect image for a particular location, it has to be the some of it's parts, that makes the magic happen.  I think this represents one of magical parts.  I could also see this as a square crop from the bottom.   Just rocks and water with a nice little twist.  I like it just as presented also.

Craig,

I agree with most others that I think you've done a great job with this vertical comp - using a good balance between all the various elements.  Like Igor, I don't see a crop or anything that could improve this.  The sprinkling of fall color in the UL gives us a sense of the season, the trees in the UR are strong vertical elements, but more than that I like the story they tell - just clinging on edge of the stream, and the solid rock formations also give us the geologic story.  Of course the cascade down the middle just ties everything together beautifully.

The only comment I'll make that I'm observing is that I get the feeling this is leaning/rotated a bit ccw.  I know it's an illusion because we all know - and I would expect in this scene, those trees are naturally leaning.  The way the lower cascade looks, and running back to the right, also looks like it's rotated... but then I look closely at the top pool and it's level.  So, while I'm pretty sure this is level, I just get the optical sense it's rotated.  Hardly worth mentioning, but thought I would.

Wonderfully crafted and I can see why this location is a tad bit difficult coming away with a good comp - and you've done it.

Strong composition For all the wonderful details, it doesn't feel cluttered at all.
