I re-visited photos from a trip to southern Africa this past July. Here's one of a White Fronted Bee Eater with prey. This was shot late in the afternoon as the sky was darkening. I like the warm tones of the bird against the cooler tones of th b/g. Cropped to about 50% of the original. Nikon D500 and 80-400 lens at 1/1000, f/7.1 and ISO 1000.

Very nice, Richard.  I really like the way the tangle of branches fills the lower right diagonal and the bird sets perpendicular to that diagonal.  The light on the bird is lovely and it really does pop beautifully from the dark bg.

Nice highlighting of the subject with a darker background.  The meal in the beak is an added touch.

Beautiful contrast between the background and the bird, and nicely composed.

I like the mystery in this image provided by the perch and the background.  The color really pops nicely.
