Winter Starling + Repost

Starlings have been hitting the feeders pretty hard with subzero temps here in Michigan,  This one was taken through our sliding glass door with late afternoon sun backlighting the scene.  I initiated the development of this image with Levels and cropped it slightly for composition. I lightened the deep shadows with a luminosity masks on dark5 and dropped dowm the highlights with another curves adjument on light1 luminosity mask. I tightened up the details with Topaz Detail on the bird and perch.  Undesirable to our native species, but photogenic for sure. K5 IIs 300 mm f4 (1/100 sec at f8.0, Iso 320)....................Jim

I adjusted levels to bring the blacks down a bit in the repost.

It certainly has some cool winter plumage, Jim.  To my eye, it looks like you brought the darks up a bit too far.  The darker parts of the plumage have a kind of brown-gray hazy look that seems to result from trying to bring up the exposure too far.

Nice pose, perch and background colors. Agree with Dennis, maybe you could tune down the shadows a bit. Still a pleasant image as posted. Cheers, Hans

Hi Hans and Dennis,

Thank you for the critique.  I was able to bring the blacks back with a slight tweak with Levels.....................Jim

It looks like you caught the Starling in fairly harsh backlight.  The repost is definitely an improvement.  Quite a difference between the two images and your reprocessing has certainly paid off.

Repost is, to me, much better.
