I found this juvenile night heron along with an adult BCNH at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands a month or so back. The orange/red eye makes me think it may have been out late carousing or something. It was very cooperative and never did move even though at least a dozen photographers came within about thirty feet of it, including me. The adult was also very cooperative. Canon 60D, f8, 1/1600 sec, iso 500, -1 EV, 349 mm, (100-400 ISLii), steadied on fence post. Small crop to get rid of unruly intruding branches. Thanks for your critiques.

Hi Ed,

An interesting pose for this late night carouser.   You handled the light very well and the image held up to your crop.  Well done......................Jim

Really nice lighting and detail on this BCNH Ed. That is quite an eye on this bird.  If I were to do anything to this image I would try to blend in order remove the out of focus white branch behind the birds leg.  I don't think it would be that difficult to do.  You could use the patch tool and then some blending with the healing brush.  It would make the image a lot stronger as I find the out of focus branch little distracting.

What a great shot, Ed.  I love his pose.  Almost like he is going to go to sleep on you, so obviously he wasn't bothered by your being there nor you activities of photographing him.

Sweet, Ed.  A nice perch and bg, and a very interesting pose.  Detail is excellent.

Ed, these juvenile night herons are a favorite of mine to photograph, more interesting than the adults for me and far more easily approachable. Nicely presented.
