The Wrong Lens

I was the first one into the blind at a workshop on Santa Clara Ranch in South Texas last month.  I had just put the teleconverter on my 500mm lens and was setting up my tripod when this Nine-banded Armadillo came in right in front of me for a drink.  I had no choice.  I hoisted up the only camera I had yet set up and managed to get a few hand-held close-up images.  Not only had I mounted the teleconverter, but it was on my crop factor camera, making the equivalent of an 1120mm focal length.  Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon EF500mm f/4L IS II USM + 1.4X III, manual exposure f/7.1 at 1/1000th, ISO 320.

Never the wrong camera and lens setup when this results. Superb close up.

I like this macro armadillo.  The bright light was making it squint.  Facial details are awesome......................Jim

Chuck, I well know the restrictions of shooting with prime glass in such situations, as many times I will never risk removing a TC while wading around for bird images. However I think you did very well with this option given the situation, and excellent composition assuming this is full frame.

I like this sot Chuck!  It's a very unusual view of an armadillo, and very affective.  You definitely made the most of the situation.

Don't worry, maybe if you had room to move back, it might help. But always we sometimes are forced due to circumstances to take what we get, yet a beautiful close up it is...

Chuck: I really like the way this is framed.  It gives us a unique look at a seldom seen animal.
