Red-shouldered Hawk
by Dennis Plank
We just came back from a week in the Monterey, California area a few days ago and I've been trying to get caught up and process some images from there. We stayed in Pacific Grove across the street from the Asilomar Conference Center and State Park. We'd walk across the conference center to the beach every morning and evening and we saw this hawk several times. This was my best chance with it though it was quite early with a marine layer blocking a lot of light.
By the way, the conference center has some very good birding as it's well wooded and the entire area seems to have a policy of topping their dead trees and leaving the snags as habitat trees. It also includes coastal dune habitat and the beach and rocks for shore birds.
7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 546 mm, hand held, f/7.1, 1/1600, iso 8000 (yes, that's three zeros), aperture priority, pattern metering, +2/3 EV. Processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped to 12.7 MP (arbitrary aspect ratio) from a vertical original. Taken at 7:15 am on March 7th.
