Rodin's Jacques de Wissant, as art is want to do, makes us wonder what has this man might have seen that day to cause such suffering and sadness. That's the experience I needed to capture and remember. The statue is over six foot but my focus comes to the eyes, even the vignette. Such a kind face, such an enduring witness.

Dave, I'm embarrassed to admit that I had to "google" this particular work by Rodin because I was not familiar with this powerful work of art.  His eyes do speak volumes but I am mesmerized by Rodin's mastery in detail and gesture of the extended hand, I find it equally expressive as the eyes and integral to the emotion that is being portrayed.  Thank you for sharing your experience.  One minor suggestion to consider, try lessening the intensity of the vignetting so that a first impression is of the artwork itself.

Paula, Thank you for such a considered response. One more fascinating thing about this particular statue is that it's over 8' tall, which meant after pre-focusing I was literally holding the camera over my head, a first for me and a bit of extra fun. I can appreciate your reaction to the vignette, though, which is admittedly overdone but only with the thought of emphasizing the "eye" dimension, a tad too obvious? -Dave

For me, the sense of despair is best expressed by the  grim, down-turned mouth.
