I took this image of a snoozing Brown Pelican in breeding plumage a week ago on the La Jolla, California coast.  He was right below me enabling me to get this nearly full-frame image. .Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon EF500mm f/4L IS II USM, AV exposure f/8 at 1/00th, ISO 640.

I like the perspective. Never seen one of a pelican up this close and from this angle. I might be tempted to crop a bit from top and right side so it includes only the bird, except that might crop a little of those beautiful larger feathers. In any event, a very nice image.

Very cool Chuck!  I would crop a bit from the top and right just to remove anything that is not pelican.  devil

This is really a neat pose, Charles. Kind of reminds me of the old classic Dracula films. Fun shot!

Very cool shot Chuck. I would also suggest cropping the top and right to make it all Pelican as Nate said. Has an artsy feel to it and has great detail. Well done!

HI all.  Thanks for the comments.  I tried the crop as suggested, but I didn't care for it. I felt one couldn't crop out the background without cutting into the feather "collar" a bit, which broke the symmetry.  I should have just shifted to the right a bit to take this image square on to the pelican's back.  Then the crop would worked perfectly.  Live and learn!
