Great Blue Pair

This pair of Great Blue Herons are nesting on what used to be one of the biggest rookery islands on the Texas coast.  All the trees on the small island were wiped out last year by Hurricane Harvey.  Local folks have built a series of wooden structures to replace the lost trees and planted new trees that will grow up to useable size for a rookery by the time the structures deteriorate.  Birds like these herons are beginning to use the new structures.  I took this image from a boat two weeks ago with my crop-factor camera and full lens power using a tripod on the foredeck.  Canon EOS 7D Mark II, Canon EF500mm f/4L IS II USM + 1.4X III at 700mm, manual exposure f?10 at 1/800th, ISO 800.

Nice detailed look against the clean background.  Good action going on here.

I love the ruffled feathers Chuck.  Similar story with Hurricane Irma knocking down the perching trees along the St. Johns River in Northern Florida this year too.  I love the action here. It looks like someone is putting their foot down about something here.
