Another Hummer
by Dennis Plank
In this case a male Anna's Hummingbird. This is the first one we've documented at our place. they seem to prefer more wooded areas and are quite common in town, often over-wintering there. This one showed up looking completely exhausted one morning. My wife and I both had errands to run that day and I saw it on my way out. Our paths happened to cross and I told her about it. After looking at it, she called and asked me to pick up a heat lamp. The hummingbird feeder was on a mount attached to our back porch, so we were able to mount the heat lamp inside and shine it on the feeder. This guy spent the entire day and next night on the feeder trying to stay warm. On the second day, it started venturing away for short periods, but this was taken the third morning and you can still see how puffed up he was. Later in the day, he was looking much better and a few days later he went on his way. You can see the red from the heat lamp on the breast and reflected in the eye in this image.
7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, f/8, 1/640, iso 2000, aperture priority, pattern metering -1/3 EV. Processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped to 13.2 MP to eliminate the feeder. The background is the house siding. Taken at 8:32 am on March 24th.

3 commentsThese little guys do need some help on really cold days. Good idea about the heat lamp/
Another trick is to take the feeders in at night and out them out again, warm, in the morning. Sometimes I even zap the whole thing in the microwave for 10 seconds to warm the fluid up further.
