Black-headed Grosbeak

I saw a female of this species from my blind last week and this morning this male came in for a short visit.  The sun was in and out and at this time was providing some rather harsher light than I could wish for, so I spent some time in processing trying to mitigate it.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 347 mm, tripod with ballhead and Sidekick, f/8, 1/4000, iso 2000 (when the sun was obscured, I needed it), aperture priority, pattern metering, -2/3 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Used Tony Kuyper's luminosity masks to help bring up the darker areas and did some final touches with the local adjustment brushes in LR.  I also blurred the background grasses a bit.  Taken this morning at 8:55.

Your comments and critiques are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Nice finding this species out in the open. You did a good job in harsh light, Dennis.

Good job in difficult harsh sun conditions. I think I would center it a little less and cut off some of the right side of the frame.  It's getting tougher to shoot past 8 AM in our area as the light becomes harsh on many days much earlier.

Excellent job on the Grosbeak in the lighting you were in. In a perfect world a little more space between the bird and the grass would have worked to your advantage, but a terrific look at this bird as posted Dennis.
