Violet-Green swallows
Oregon Gardens, Silverton, OR
I had a choice of making the birdhouse straight, or the pole straight - not both! The birdhouse won.

Odd choice of houses for these, Sandy, but whatever works! A cute house and the background makes the garden look beautiful.

Well done.

I guess "martin" houses are happily used by the related swallows too. There was a sparrow in at least one of the boxes, as usual.
I see Sibleys says only tree swallows, but not these violet-greens, use nest boxes - the greens prefer cliff crevices and hillside cavities.
I guess this old birdhouse with it's flavor and charm enticed them!

That's funny, Sandy. Maybe there's a difference between western and east coast birds. Violet-greens were the first birds to adopt boxes when my wife put them up something over 20 years ago. The tree swallows kind of took over for awhile, but the VGs are making a comeback. They do favor boxes either on or near houses, perhaps simulating a cliff face. We always put a few up on the edge of the roof for them, but they use the ones out on the posts as well..

Sandy, so colorful and fun. I do like the portrait orientation you chose. Congrats on the WP.
