I was on the patio earlier today testing the pretty amazing minimum focus on this lens, about 32 inches on the long side at 400 mm. The body is about 8 mm long, around 20 mm with legs as posed. I have very limited knowledge about the smaller species, so any ID would be appreciated. This one was tiny, and I was attracted to the brightly colored patterns. Image is about 75% of original as cropped to 4x5 aspect.

Bill, that lens does provide very good close focusing capability.  I use it especially for critters like dragonflies and butterflies, where getting in close with my 180 Macro can be a big challenge.  I know quite a few others who also use it for close up work.  The sharpness and good dof on this spider look great.  (I'm thinking your spider is an Orchard Orb weaver.)  The spines on it's legs and the translucent green of the legs show up very well in the larger view.  I did have to work through the microfocus adjustment a couple of times to get autofocus correct on larger critters and longer distances.

Bill, I like the colors that have come out of the underside of the orchard weaver. These are very beautiful spiders with beautiful metallic looking legs.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I knew from googling that it was an orchard something-or-other, but wasn't sure which. Mark, my macro work has ALWAYS been using manual focus, so maybe I'll try your method. Thanks again.

Bill: Terrific capture of the spider and superb DOF control. If you could tease a tiny bit more detail out of the web in processing I think that would be a nice plus but this works very well as is. Most excellent.>=))>
