Storks at Dawn

I took this from a boat last month on the Chobe River in Botswana, just as the dawn sun broke the horizon, briefly casting a pink glow over the otherwise white birds.  Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon EF500mm f/4L IS II USM, manual exposure, f/7.1 at 1/500th, IS 2000.

Nice light, Chuck.  I like the relationship of the two foreground birds.

This is a nice image of these birds which are, unfortunately becoming quite rare outside of conservation areas.  That pink colour, which is not on all the individuals, may indicate that the birds were coming into their breeding plumage.  The intense red on the face, yellow on the bill, and dark legs also indicate breeding.  The season starts in June and peaks in July to September so you may have found them just getting ready.  The "bald" individual in the centre is most unusual.

Hi Chuck,

The lighting is very nice.  I like the comp and the BG is slightly speckled where the sky is showing through the OOF vegetation.  Other than that, a good luck at an uncommon African bird........................Jim
