On the Beach

These are wild Spanish Mustang horses on the beach of Corolla Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  This shot was taken on a jeep tour of Corolla Island on April 20, 2012 and has not been previously posted on NPN.  These are Banker horses, a breed of feral horses, descended from domesticated ancestors that probably arrived on the barrier islands during the sixteenth century.  Since they are free roaming, Bankers are often referred to as "wild" horses even though their ancestors were domesticated.

Nikon D300, Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF.  f/5.0, 1/6400s, iso800, at 180mm.  In a moving jeep I couldn't be conservative with the iso.

A nice scene and good looking horses, Jay.  I do wish the smaller one hadn't chosen just that moment to step in front of the sorrel's nose.  However, it's a sweet image as posted.

Thanks very much for your comment, Dennis.  The sorrel horse is called the dominant stallion, and the entire group is known as his harem!
