I always struggle to get out of bed before dawn even if there is the possibility of finding good morning light in some iconic location such as Bryce Canyon N. P.  I felt it was worth the effort one particular morning this past April when I stood at one of the overlooks in the park and witnessed the sun rising over the distant mountains, illuminating several of the hoodoos in the amphitheater below.

It's quite a site to behold, Paula.  If it weren't for the people, there would be no better place to witness this sweet light. Beautiful.

These hoodoos are remarkable in their color and tonality. The various shades of brown is remarkable. The sunlit areas are really noticeable and get your attention. What's peculiar is that the sunlit areas are darker than some of the shadowed areas. Having never been there I can't say if that's unreal or not. Regardless, I would burn in that sunlit tree top in the very front. But that's just me. Oh, and I would burn in the small pale area at the very top.

This spot light from behind view looks great, Paula.  The sense of the hoodoos being lit from within is wonderful.  One of the benefits of getting up to watch the dawn, even in a crowded National Park is that there are very few "tourists" up and about.  This is a spectacular look at Bryce.

Hi Paula,
I too have a hard time with predawn, especially fromlate Spring through early Fall.  If predawn is 5:30 or 6 a.m., I can swing it fairly easily, but earlier requires peer pressure.  It’s one of the reasons I like taking workshops occasionally...to have the discipline and remind myself of what I am missing.

I like the light in this image.  Bryce glows so nicely in early light.  it looks natural to me.  The only suggestions I have are to clone/heal that top right edge where we see something cut off and possibly do some clone/heal on the tip of the foreground tree....if that doesn’t violate your artistic practice.  I like having the glow of the candles and the one grove of trees a little lit.  The single yellowish top of the foreground tree pulls my eye away from more interesting parts of the scene.

I'm right there with you about the early mornings!  On my recent trip to the Tetons my wake up call was coming at 3:45 a.m. to be on location in time for the alpen glow and sunrise.  frown

I'm glad you resisted temptation for this image though.  The spot lighting on the hoodoos is exceptional.  I also like the way that this conveys the scale of the landscape.

Congrats on your recent weekly pick.  That image was well deserving and this image may be hot on its heels!  devil

Incredible glow on those hoodoos. Like the way you made them center stage in this comp.

Igor and Marylynne, thank you for your suggestions regarding my Bryce N. P. image.  I'm re-posting the image after working on the areas that I believe you were pointing out in your comments, I think the re-post does help in focusing attention on the back-lit hoodoos themselves. crying
