Rock Ptarmigan, breeding male

When you're white and hunted for the stewpot, and reside on a brown tundra, you'd better be living near very good camouflage - and also be able to stand very still for long periods of time.

Interesting and rather deceptive choice of camouflage, Sandy. The shape and large size of it almost makes this guy look like a feast, but well seen and found for you. Good that you used f16 to maximize detail in the surroundings. Thanks for sharing.

Bill - look again, the "body" of the bird is actuallya perfectly-coloured  ROCK . The ptarmigan is hiding behind it - that's what "perfect camouflage" meant!  crying

Sandy, read my comment again. I saw it first time around, and that is actually what I meant, but maybe should have expressed it another way. The shape of the rock resembles a large bird.

Bill, lol, sorry. Someone on another site actually did think the rock was the body.

You really caught this one in a nice position to show off how its camouflage works even in the spring, Sandy.  Very well done.  I really like the nice crisp foreground.

Hi Sandy
You did a great job in framing and punching out the for-grouond. I reallly like the large photo.
