Tafoni #8, San Mateo Coast, California / 2018

This picture was made earlier this month at one of my favorite locations along Northern California’s San Mateo coast. I plan to add it to my on-going Tafoni series.

The square presentation is based on a RAW file that was obtained by stitching together two horizonal frames in Adobe Camera RAW.

Canon 5Ds R, 24-70mm @ 47mm, 1/4 sec, f/22, ISO 100 / Photoshop CC

Thanks for looking and for sharing your thoughts on this photograph.

Regards,

Anil, What a fine addition to your Tafoni series and I like the square format from the two vert images a lot. The cool blue tones look great against the warm tones of the sunlit areas. Always impressed by the textures within this series. This composition really works!
I enjoy seeing what you come up with next!

I like it, Anil. From an abstract standpoint, the upper part of this gives the impression of a beached whale. Would be curious to know the age of these formations as compared to those found in places like the Colorado Plateau.

A very striking image,  Anil. The warm and cool tones presented together work very nicely.  Agree with Nick and Bill about the  resemblance of a whale face profile. Might go for a bit more contrast between the two dominant tones.  The image looks a little "grainy".

I just looked at the series and it is brilliant...
Beautiful and very creative.
This one works as well with the whale image.

I'm a Tafoni fan also, Anil, so I am enjoying this image. The blue hunk at the top almost looks like a whale to me. I like the blue and yellow coloring, the grainy look, and the square crop. The only thing I might play with are the rocks in the upper right corner. They are  bright for the upper part of the image and I wonder how they would look burned down a little. Even without this kind of tweaking this is a fine image.

The shapes eroded into the sandstone are great, Anil and you've spread them very well through the frame.  The warm/cool contrast and the "blue whale" work well also.  I have a mixed sense in viewing that this is an eroding ruin in a desert.  I expect that you've done some "extra" microcontrast enhancement to bring out the grain in the rocks, which adds to the story of an archeological find in the desert.

This is great. The larger image really brings out all that nice texture to the stone. The top looks like a sperm whale, but I guess I'm not the first to notice that. Well done.

I don't have any data regarding how old these sandstone formations are or how their age compares to that of similar formations found in the Colorado Plateau. I'd like to think that they are much younger but I could be wrong.

Thanks for all the comments posted so far. Your feedback is appreciated very much.

Some of you have mentioned about the grainy look of the image so I thought I’d share some thoughts on it. The grain that you see is the natural grain of the sandstone at this location. It is so rough that it makes coarse grade sandpaper look like glass. When seen from a distance in bright daylight the tafoni can give the appearance of being smooth. However, when photographed from close quarters in soft evening light the grain really stands out.

Here is a near 100% crop that shows how textured the sandstone surface is.

Thanks for sharing the close up regarding the grain. The yin yang motif works really well.

Could tell this was yours from the thumb, Anil, even though I've not seen your work in a long time.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm seeing a blue whale here.

I like the abstract character of this a lot.  The blues in the upper left, though, maybe seem a bit light for shadowed areas, which I assume they are.  Just not sure if they'd look good darker either.

Sweet abstract, Anil. The shade of blue up top works beautifully with the earth tones of the scene and when opening the large version I was greeted with a wonderful array of details and textures. Cool looking blue whale.cool
