I move slowly and quietly when walking a trail.  I was being shadowed by a family group of sandhill cranes and they were picking off insects.  I slowly turned and this particular one posed before preening the breast feathers. D500 300mm f4.0 (1/2500 sec at f6.3, Iso 800 + fill-2.0ev). Levels, slight bump up in temperature, Topaz Detail, crop for comp.....................Jim

Beautiful portrait, Jim.  I love the head position and you framed it very well.

Gorgeous portrait.  Great job on the color detail and DOF.  What a cool opportunity.

Great head shot of him, Jim.  The details are amazingly sharp, with a nice soft background.  Got to love the pose he gave to you.

Color me jealous.  I would love to get this close to a Sandhill.  Very nice Jim.

Nice exposure on this, Jim. Making no sudden movements often improves our chances for close range images. The rusty colored plumage begs the question of where was it taken. I never see so much brown by the time they are at Bosque in the fall.

Incredible picture. I love the detail and the shadow, which adds to the overall image.  The background is a huge plus.

Wow!  Killer portrait of this Sandhill Crane, Jim!  It must have been walking right on your heels to get this close at 300mm!  Exceptional detail in the large version and the turned down beak made for a perfect vertical composition.  Very nice shot!  devil
