At Peace in the Pond #2

While I was shooting photos of the cow Moose (see my last post) this calf suddenly popped into the frame!  it apparently had been hiding in the brush.  The interesting thing was that it's color was also somewhat odd as you can see! So Mom is probably fairy old, had a long cold Winter, got torn up by a Grizzly Bear AND is raising a kid! Now that's big time girl power! No wonder she's getting white hair!

Mom definitely looks pretty old
Sweet! You have such great opportunities up there, I am envious..
Wish the baby's face was toward us, but the tongue out makes up for that.
Nice habitat, love the water drops, and that tongue!
The opposing stances add a lot.
A very nice family portrait here - well-done!

I enjoy looking at both of these moose photos.  Like the cow with calf best.  Good colors and details.  That old girl must be a moose super mom!  Thanks for sharing.

Gary. nice to have gotten the calf to cooperate by making an appearance. I suspect that Mom was keeping a cautious eye on you all the while, potentially a hazardous situation for unwelcome onlookers. I've only seen, but not photographed, this situation once several years ago while canoeing in the Boundary Waters. Nice light, color and poses of both.

This is a great image.  You're probably right about her age and color.  When we were first clearing the land and building our place here, almost 20 years ago, there was a cow moose who was already mature, and she had a rough coat and coloring like this.  She was a GREAT mother to many calves.  She used our lawn as a resting area a lot, and had no qualms about walking out onto the lawn and laying her ears back to tell you she wanted you off the lawn.  I'm sure the several cows that frequent  the area now are her daughters.  Two of the three cows have a rough coat like this, and they are not all that old.  Other cows we have seen not far away have been dark colored and super-slick.
You mention that she is not limping; that is so good.  A couple days ago, along the highway, we saw a young looking cow with a calf, and she was really limping.  She was limping with her whole left rear leg, all the way up to the hip.  I hope she gets better!!!
The poses in this image are so nice. Very natural, but they also are balanced, and the water drops are the icing on the cake.  The detail in this is super. I am just on my laptop, but to me the colors are right on.  The calves around here start out quite reddish, and then turn a little more brownish.  I love the green BG and the two colors of moose in that clear water.  Peaceful Summertime indeed. devildevil

The splash of the water, the nice natural setting, the fine details... all ads up to a shot that colors me jealous.  Very nice capture indeed.
