Homestead in the Ohio Creek Valley, Colorado

Canon EOS 5D w/Tamron 24-135 @ 135mm

I've passed by this place many times on my way back to civilization, but never had decent light or circumstance to stop and shoot. There are several buildings here, although they're all on private property, and there's a sign at the gate that is hawking luxury homesites. I suspect that one of these years I'll drive by and the buildings will be history, in more ways than one. This shot is from the fence line. I thought the aspens having that "come-and-gone" look fit well with these weathered buildings from a bygone era.

Todd, I like the image but I find myself wanting to see more on top..I am wondering what is up there.

A fine image, Todd. The lighting is soft and muted, bringing out the colors nicely. I too, wish to see a bit more on top, but it works quite well as a pano too.

FYI: I cropped the image just enough on top to eliminate the sky, which was just a grayish-white blob. Had I had my 100-300 lens in hand (rather than ALL the way back in the truck 100' away!), I'd have shot it with no sky intentionally. With the 24-135 @ 135mm, I included a sliver of sky and some foreground acreage. This crop brought out only those elements necessary to the image.

Excellent. I understand why you cropped the sky out. Great shot.

Very nice, striking image. Gives us the old west (ghost town) feel with color, I love it....

We're going to have to rename this the 'weathered homestead' gallery  . I love this one too. Can you imagine having been the family that stopped here back when and said, yep, this is a nice spot to call home...and could do it. I think it's well-balanced; my eyes move through the clearing and drift up only enough to take in the two contrasting stands of aspen.

Todd,
What I like best here is the step effect of the placement of the buildings, going with the slope of the land and the colors of the buildings matching the meadows. Almost camouflaged. The yellow of the aspens acts like sunlight to me, brightening this up enough so it feels a bit less desolate and deserted. I could see choosing this spot to live.

It is a shame that this beautiful place will have million dollar homes built on it shortly. Great image!
