Earth, Wind and Fire

I captured this image high in Washington's Goat Rocks range, from my camp on the Teiton Glacier during a late winter traverse of the range. The skies opened up at sunset revealing an amazing atmosphere of golden light, clouds and peaks surrounding me. Rainier can be seen distant. I included the sun directly in some images for dramatic effect. I can understand if you feel it is too dominant though. Thanks for your comments. This has always been one of my favorites....I don't fly, so this is as close as it gets for me!

This is magnificent Marc. As close to flying as you could get without doing so. (although I'd hate to fly quite so close to the mnt tops  ) I think the sun is perfect in this shot.
I almost feel like I'm floating on the FG clouds while looking at this!

Looks wonderful to me...I don't find the sun too dominant. I like the light on the clouds.

Well seeing as how the sun is millions of times the mass of earth and its radient energy makes life and therefore photography possible, I think dominance is appropriate for the sun. Beautiful!

Another monster of a photo, Marc! The wispy orange clouds at the bottom add so much depth, giving this a 3D feel. Everything else is just monumental.

Marc, you hike some amazing places (and times)! I like the sun in this--wouldn't have it any other way. Everything looks gorgeous in that golden light, but I think the close, thin clouds at the bottom of the frame ratchet this image right over the top. Did you have to run up and down the glacier trying to place them in just the right spot, or did you just stick your head out of the tent and fire this off!?

...And what do you mean you don't fly? ...Ever?

Thanks Brian. I actually only had about 30 feet of ground to work with here. My camp was on a flat section of snow atop a rock pinnacle. On most sides were crevasses and cliffs. Ever been up in Goat Rocks? Beautiful area. Great views of Adams and Rainier. It's a different game in winter though.
No, I don't fly. I have been known to do it on rare occasion if absolutely nessesary though, complaining every bit of the way. I will have to get over it and visit New Zealand someday - that's about what it would take to get me in the air! Funny I like to climb and hate to fly. It really has little to do with being up high and everything to do with me not having any control over it if something happens.

Marc you've out done yourself with this one!! My first thought was, Geez, did he get this from a plane?! But knowing a bit of the mountain goat you are, I figured this was taken from solid ground, grand stand seating of course!!

Nice shot reminding me of many a chilhood experience with my dad climbing these peaks. Makes me dread all the more being in Las Vegas (except the money coming, allowing me to do a lot more of this very thing before too long). Thanks for the inspiration.
