Rainbow Falls

by Marc Adamus

Gallery: LandscapePosted September 6, 20069,302 views45 comments
I captured these especially colorful rainbows as the last light of day filtered through the trees, cast onto a beautifully terraced waterfall in Oregon's Cascade range. The shot was taken at the end of June, this year.

5D, 70-200 at 110mm, no filters, .5 seconds at F/8. RAW processing, slight dodge/burns, crop, sharpening only.

Wonderful effect, top shot Marc, the amount of little rocks and spills the water creates is only topped by the rainbow. I am glad you didnt attempt too much PS work as think the image would be easy to over cook with such a wide range of contrast.

Fantastic - the terracing is beautiful, but the spotlighting steals the show.

Actually had a physical reaction when I saw this one! Wow! I litterally jumped off my seat. This for me is in the top five of all your postings on NPN. A wonderful example of the definition of photography - painting with light. An absolute stunner. Nothing else to say except maybe one more - Wow!

Marc, I would have to say that I'm not sure one could easily paint and image this creative and unique. To find this as a natural scene really makes it even more special. Simply a SUPER shot! :toast:

I'm glad you folks like it. I hadn't thought to post it on the ESS forum until I dug it out of my files to license it to a client earlier in the week. It was hidden away on the back pages of my site. I think I'll try to give it some more attention!

Excellent work, Marc. Especially impressive that you are as successful at producing evocative images on an intimate scale as well as a grand one.

Yep...I think you do need to pay more attention to this one. This is superbly fantastic in every sense of what a nature photographic image stands for, Marc. It is an honor to be able to "critique" your images.

My gosh! I've seen a lot of waterfalls and would say that the water alone is nice here, but to catch the light as it is is extraordinary. Quite a wonderful scene to see and think about.

William, I knew the area well and knew these falls did catch some of the last light. I went on a clear day for that reason, while I do most waterfall shooting on cloudy days. I did not anticipate where the rainbows would occur though, so I was pleasantly surprised. The 4-mile hike back in the dark was worth it.

Does anyone like this alternate, slightly more inclusive, warmer version any better? Comparatively, there was a lot of blue in the first post.

I think I like the second version slightly better. Scrolling down through 33 comments  separates the two and it would be interesting to see them side by side, but I really didn't see a huge difference from the first to the second..

Wow, Marc! This is gorgeous! I prefer the second version. The warmer pallette makes the rainbows seem more alive.

What can I say, fantastic! Is this the same location as "Spring Showers"?

BTW, can't decide which version is better I do like the blue tone in the first post ...

Martin, no. It does look similar though. We have many Basalt terraced falls like these in Oregon. This was 200 miles North in the Mount Hood Wilderness.

This is a beautiful image that works well. The sun hitting the rocks just slightly is what makes it a great image for me.

Marc,

Interesting how much the scene changes in the second version when you warm it up. The first version is clearly a mountain scene and the second one gives off an aura of a tropical scene, something like the images I have seen from Costa Rica. I like them both, but the scene is more 'inviting' to me in the warmer version.

No wide angle shot? No.

Actually I love the both versions. They give me different modes.

Except for the warmer tone, I notice you cropped the bottom differently, the second one with more bottom rocks. Did you do it intentionally? To me the rocks provide some sort of the "support" to the falling water.

wow, my second comment, where is my first one?

Henry

Hi Marc,

I prefer the first one, it's very very beautiful !
Because this blue ambiance is more contrasting with the warm colors of the rainbow ;)
