Common Flameback Woodpecker (male)
by Graeme Guy
A walk through the forest trails in Singapore with a group of birders located a pair of Common Flameback Woodpeckers setting up a home in a hole in a tree. I went back for 3 weekends and watched the preparation before noticing they were feeding chicks inside. I set up the camera adjacent to the hole and targetted the common perch under the opening. I took up position 30 yards back under cover and watched with binoculars, firing the camera with a small radio-controlled unit.
My sister feels the bird has been stitched together using some quilting method, such is the pattern of feathers.
Canon EOS1D2, 500 f4, 580ex flash-0.3, 1/125, f11, quantum radio trigger.
Kind regards
Graeme

Congrats on the EP!
I was hoping for a chick sticking out of the nest but could not check them every day and fledging seemed to be sudden.
Kind regards
