The old boat shed

It was on a beautiful morning just like this 1 and a half years ago at this location that my journey into photography began. Winnie had just purchased a Nikon D70 for an upcoming trip to Europe and we wanted to learn how to use it before leaving Australia. It was my first experience even holding an SLR. We decided to drive to Cradle Mountain National Park, the mountain's peak is the most photographed in Australia. My first lesson was that you have to wake up early. We organized a shoot just after dawn and the conditions were perfect, wispy clouds, no movement in Dove Lake allowing for a crystal clear reflection, great light, no clouds obscuring the mountain. It was the first time I had been touched by a landscape and I decided at then that I would learn to capture something of the beauty of the land. I have returned to Cradle Mountain 7 times and have captured it in many its many moods. On this recent morning I was reminded of the time I made my decision to pursue photography, clear sky with radiating clouds over a still lake. Specifications : Gitzo tripod, polarizing filter, ISO 50, f16, shutter 1/15. Conversion to B&W using channel mixer in PS CS2.

This is just excellent! The B&W choice is great and accentuates the image.

Superb, Kah. Remarkably effective use of B&W to bring out the textures in that shed. A very dramatic sky, and as for the shed's reflection... A real pleasure to look at.

Thank you for all your comments. I should mention I used my usual gear of choice, Canon 5D & 17-40mm 4L, although I have just upgraded to the 16-35 2.8L. I went for B&W to give it an ole time feel to go with the old shed. Looking at this again I wonder if it is a little dark overall?

It doesn't look a little dark to me, Kah, and this is on my monitor at work - which is notorious for darkening images!

Congrats on the EP, been there and of course were just about totally fogged in. In 2 hours we saw, rain, hail, snow, winds, and lightning. You fared much better and B?W is a nice take on this icon of Tasmania

Mike the highlands of Tasmania gets a lot of rain. I often go there on a weekend and have a day or 2 washed out. Often the stillness after a storm is incredible.

Very nice image, great lighting and composition, fantastic clouds and I love the reflections. B&W is probably a good choice, though the original colour could also be a winner. :toast:

Vincent, yes the colour shot is also nice but there are already shots like this out there. I felt the B&W, the reflection and the cloud formation made it instantly stand out from other similar shots. Thank you for your feedback.
