Alpine Fox

I'm not a wildlife shooter, but once in a while this red fox comes and visits our research station at the top. I had forgotten about this file which I shot in November, and found it tonight going through files.

The col of the distant mountains obviously goes right through his head. Is this ideal? How does the comp look overall.

I shot this at ISO 800, so who knows about print quality, so if any wildlife shooters can speak on that as well, I'd appreciate it!

Hi Jim,

I love this shot. It shows the fox's environment very well. The fox is nice and sharp and the color contrast is really nice here. I like your comp. I do see some noise in the sky, but that can easily be removed before printing. I didn't realize a red fox would live in this type of terrain. :toast:

I love the comp! The sweeping lines of the mountains are also present in the foreground rocks, the lines all bring the eye to the subject nicely. For me the off center comp works well. Could be my monitor, but I would lighten things up just a tad...may expose more noise in the sky but just a little bit of Neat Image would take care of it. Overall great shot in my opinion!

Great shot! How could you forget about this one?? I agree about lightening it just a tad. Use either Noise Ninja or Neat Image to reduce the noise. At first I wasn't sure about the "V" of themountains framing the Fox's head. However the more I look at it the more I like it. Good job. :toast:

Very nice. I'm not crazy about the position of the fox in relation to the "V", I think I would have moved a little left and put fox against RH mountain. Not the usual fox habitat which is cool.

Excellent portrait. I like the cool background colours contrasting with the fox. I see numerous possibilities for crops but this does just fine. :toast:

This is great, Jim! The color of the fox against the BG is really stunning! I think the composition works very well.

Sweet photo Jim!

Don't worry about ISO 800...I use it a lot and it is not a problem if you post-process carefully the photo; usually I apply a strong noise reduction on background and a much "lighter" NR on the subject.

I love this shot. Foxes are one of my favorite animals. What an unusual place to find a fox. The comp as it is, really displays the environment but the sky is a bit destracting to me. I think croping the top just below the top of the right mountain would bring more attention to the fox.

HI Jim.. nice shot... the foreground rocks and the Fox work great, but as you say the V shape of the mountains does distract from subject a touch. I think if you had shot this at a slightly lower angle that may have helped. Noise is always a problem, but with good software you can minimise this, but you cannot remove it completely without blurring the image. I try never to go beyond ISO400, when shooting dark backgrounds, as the level of noise is managable in programs such as Photoshop etc. Good shot though and hope this guy comes back so you ca get some more great pics.

This is so Great! How exciting to have such a beautiful visitor. For me the Y shape works because of the ears. With the ears forward it may not be the case. But who knows and conrats on the EP. :toast:

Cool shot Jim!!! I missed this one (and many more ) this week. I do hope he comes back again and again for you. I do wish his ears were turned forward but... I, too, think the sky is a bit distracting, if you'd moved to the left or right to position him in front of one of the mountains, I think would have made it. But you took advantage of what you had! Congrats on the EP!!! Nicely done!!!

Congrats on the EP Jim!! I think that V, might be a bit distracting, but also helps to focus on the fox's great expression, so they offset like penalties in the NFL, and the shot remains great as it stands.

Great scene Jim. I was lucky to have seen a lot of these guys, along with many other free range wildlife in the two years I spent in Alaska. I recall seeing one of these near our remote site in Cold Bay years back now. Congratulations on your recent EP selection here, just a wonderful image overall. :wavey:

Great shot. Makes me think perhaps the fox is the viewer and YOU are the subject.

Jim,

I am commenting after this image has been selected as "Editors Pick". Congratulations for that. I like especially the contrast of the colors, the curious look of the fox, and its pose. You also managed to get the image well balanced between environmen t and the fox. I personally do not like very much that the edges of the background mountains cross the head of the fox. I wounder if you have had the time to make other images, maybe from a lower position... I usually let such lines cross at neck level, if possible. I know that often one only has one shot or try, and under that conditions this is a very unique image of a fox in my opinion...

Happy Holidays...
