Hello Rachel and welcome to NPN.

Nice off center composition and that red background contrasts nicely with the needles and butterfly. Excellent exposure with beautiful color. Sharp detail, but perhaps not positioned perfectly in the DOF to get the rear wing better in focus.

What a gorgeous set of colors. I like how the butterfly is completely framed by the red background. The black "frame" also work extremely well with this image.

Hi Rachel, Beautiful image, sharp with nice detail, exposed well, and, an usual, but neat background.
(I'm surprised you got so much DOF at f5.6.) Also surprised you hand-held a 75-300 lens at a SS of 1/125 and maintained sharpness. You have a steady hand. That, plus the flash. Darn good job anyway.

THANKS EVERYONE - yes I do have a steady arm - I can get shots in focus at 1/60, and if you add the flash, no matter how feeble, I think it did also help - I feel I was at my best length of the lens, at 200mm - length at which results are often better than at the other end of 300mm. The background is unusual as I was on top area of the exhibition and wanted to shoot this owl butterfly because there was a lot of empty space behind it. But there was also a lot of people on the lower level, always blocking my background and suddenly this big man, with a very red large jacket blocked the entire view - as it was a solid color, I thought it might be blurry enough (because he was very far below) to create nice contrasts and I shot - and I am happy I did. I did use a touch of unsharp mask on finished image.

Cool shot as I have commented elsewhere. Let's be thankful for big men who wear very large red jackets.

The unique background really makes this image stand out - with an added bonus of being a complimentary color to the branches!

Hi Rachel,
Love the drawings of the wings!
If you had been a bit more parallel to the wing plane you would have had a perfect shapness, otherwise a beautiful image.
