Not Pretty

This was pretty gruesome, but how can you not shoot it? I think the lamb was sick, because they're usually not down on the river, and the coyote caught it out on the ice. I didn't see the initial attack, but instead of trying to kill the lamb, the coyote just kept chewing at its face. This went on for about 15 minutes, until the coyote went over and lay down, leaving the lamb alone to sit there. It would have been bloodier, but the extreme cold (-37F the next morning) probably clotted it pretty quick. I stayed until it was too dark (and too cold) to shoot, but nothig else happened. The next morning the lamb was just bits of hair scattered about the ice and a number of coyotes were cleaning up.

Lamar Valley, Yellowstone.

Great capture, Pete. Strong image. Sad, but that's nature all right.

That is an amazing capture, but ****. It's difficult to look at. It must have been exciting to been there. I might have been tempted to get closer...

Would have been hard to watch, but you're right, you have to shoot it.

Absolutely stunning image. I have wondered for years why coyotes sometimes kill so slowly when they are capable of a much cleaner and quicker job. I suppose it seems cruel by human standards. I once witnessed a similar situation where two coyotes mutilated a fawn. At any rate, I envy you, this is a great image.

:frown: Extremely sad for sure, sometimes nature isn't so pretty, and you captured it well Pete. I would have been shooting right beside you had I been there.

Horrible! Both the photo and the story. :frown:
Life is cruel and death is hard. This photo certainly says it all. Thanks for posting and congrats on the EP. :toast:

I find the intersection of the background rock with the coyote's back distracting.

Man, I hate when wild dogs tear my face off.

This is hard to look at and at the same time captivating. Watching this, I cant help but get a bit mad at the coyote. I mean - why not killing the lamb fast and painless indstead of torturing it to death? Nature can be brutal without brutal intentions.
Great image!

Oh my... poor lamb! It would indeed be hard to imagine that a healthy one would let this happen, but what a way to go!!

It shows how incredibly tough life can be in the wild, but I hope that this doesn't spark any negative feelings towards coyotes. The little fellow is just getting some food without the intention of inflicting more pain than necessary. However, it surprises me that he targets the snout like this. You'd think there are more nutritious parts to feed on and that the snout could potentially still be risky, especially in the beginning. Sheep have pretty strong biters too after all...

Well done on a very tough subject!
