Fallen Frost

It was very cold (-30C ) and getting dark, when I came upon these. In my imagination , they looked like fallen leaves, out on the river, in the middle of nowhere. Miramichi River, NB Canada. Thanks, Tim

It wasn't just in your imagination, it's in mine too. This is a wonderfully delicate scene, and the angle you took to record it must be about perfect. Really beautiful work.

Beautiful! I noticed you folks on the other side of the continent were hogging all the cold air this week. I wish we had more of it! I love scenes like this. In fact, without even reading your comment I thought these looked much like fallen leaves. A fantastic capture, very well seen. A unique winter image and one of the better images I've seen lately anywhere.

Timothy,

This is great!!! If it weren't for your title, I'd have thought that they were leaves.

This is superb Tim! Incredible scene (don't get much of this in Florida!) The frost looks so deleicate and the blue color adds to that sense even more. Wonderful image.

Very nice image. I would just be tempted to increase the contrast a wee bit.

I'm still not sure what I'm looking at, but who care. It feels natural and the light is nice.

Thanks for the comments folks. I'm glad other people see the leaves too! I thought maybe I was losing it out in the cold. I was tempted to call this " Frosted Flakes" but then that name is probably registered or something!

Tony, I was out photographing snow drifts on the river, in this open patch of ice and very hard drifted snow, were these flakes of frost. They are quite large crystals, probably about the size of aspen leaves, many of them. They even blew around a bit like leaves.

It's hard to see in the photo but also gathered around many "leaves" were very soft , delicate bundles of frost that resembled goose down or something similar.

The colour is pretty much what I got from the camera, daylight balance, deep shade.
Pentax ISTDs, f32 , 1/8 sec. Thanks, Tim

Great image Tim. Very unique and compelling. Looks AWESOME as is but I wonder if the frost 'leaves' would stand out a bit more if you bumped up the contrast just a smidge. I love it!

Wonderful image. I played with curves in photoshop on this and liked more contrast. Try it with a "S" curve pulled down slightly and see what you think.

Nice work.

Great capture of the very unique, Tim. It does look as you mentioned overall, leaves of some sort. Did the site look as blue as the image is presented here too?

Paul,
The area was in , what I would call deep shade. That is, the sun was well below the horizon. So, to the eye it's kinda grey, light blue. With a daylight white balance, the image appears quite blue, especially at 1/8 sec for a shutter speed. I did increase the contrast a bit and darkened it some too. Thanks, Tim

Thanks for the kind words! I was going to post a letter in the general discussion forum a few days ago because I wanted to comment on the amazing images that are being posted lately , especially in the ES+S and apologize for not commenting more. I just couldn't keep up!

To be selected this week is both an honour and is very humbling at the same time.

In all honesty , I was very surprised to be even considered. I guess every dog has his day!

Thanks, Tim
