I think you have loads of nice detail in this shot but I find all the different colours in the FG and BG a bit distracting. Good subject placement though.

Terri, this works very nicely for me. I like the diagonal formed by the flowers and the head/wing of the insect. I also like how the sharply focused head/eyes anchors the image.
As always, nice job!

Hi Terri, This is an excellent comp with vibrant color and plenty to roam around the image and look at. I have a very similar setup to yours. Do you do any adjusting of your flash output on your 550EX - either on camera or on flash?

Hi Terry,
this works for me too ,
the DOF is spectacular for 9.5, I can almost touch the butterfly, the rich colors are very pleasing.

Thanks for all comments....
Rick: I get frequent e-mails asking about flash technique. Trial and error has led to a pretty high success rate with the 550EX for me (and fortunately learn something new every time I'm out!). I always use the ETTL capability, but usually start with -1 comp on the flash to avoid an over-flashed look. For macros of reflective shelled insects, I usually have the 550EX's diffuser down. Also, when possible (for cooperative subjects like this one) I use the FE Lock/Preflash to expose for a part of the frame other than the center focus point (which I generally use). For this butterfly, the FE waslocked on the bloom, to keep from blowing them out.

Terri - my focus heads right to those EYES - the splashes of color from the flowers and the diagonal of the flutterby work perfectly IMO.. Well done!!

I agree with Michael.. the composition leads you straight to the eyes.. great detail on the face. Those little antenna thingies are pretty strange looking..never noticed that before

Terri, you're killing me with these wonderful shots. Where your work really excels for me, and this one is a classic example, is that you always get the critical focus at just the right spot. another beauty!

Do I need to mention the "P" word . Terri phew this is sharp, detailed and of course nothing but the best of P. To have the proboscis drinking away is as beautiful as those eyes. The colours, well man are they gorgeous.
All the best Terri, superb and nothing would I change. Wish it was mine
Danny.
