California Quail

This is a shot that I had envisioned for a while.

At this time of year quails are paired up and the males are inclined to get up on perches and watch out for their ladies. I found a nice mossy stump in a nearby woodlot....set it up....and after 4 or 5 hours in a blind.....voila!

Camera Model: Canon EOS 30D
Shutter speed: 1/125 sec
Aperture: 5.6
Exposure mode: Av
Exposure compensation: -2/3
Flash: Off
Metering mode: Multi-segment
ISO: 160
Focal length: 300mm f/4 IS

 What can I say, all around great shot. I'm not very familiar with this species, I always think of them existing in arid environments but this proves otherwise.

Hi Glenn,

Beautiful shot, great soft light and colors. I think of these guys as living in dry climes, but I guess that's just how I'm used to seeing them down here. Cool!

Congrats on the well deserved EP, Glenn. I love the season when our quail (Gambel's in AZ) sit up and crow. You earned this after 4-5 hours in a blind - cramps!
