Canon 40D
1/800s f5.6
ISO 400 100-400is @ 370mm
Raw hand held

I don't get achance for this type of action often but was lucky to see this chase today. The fox was ready to grab this guy when the squirrel stopped and flipped the other way leaving the fox scrambling and way behind.
Comments appreciated

Great action! I wish the squirrel was a little sharper but its Superman pose is excellent.

This is awesome, it is just great to see this play of nature, many people will go their whole lives and never see anything like this. By you taking it and sharing it gives many a rare glimpse into nature and hopefully a deeper appreciation. That's makes it beautiful and usefull!

Good on you.

That's a great shot Rick! I like the squirrel defying gravity in this one! Where did you catch this one?

That's a fantastic shot Rick - I love it!! The poses are great, as is the comp. The techs might be off a little, but that's very minor considering what you captured here. Very nice. A slight crop off the top of this would work well too I think, but that's just a preference.

Thanks for the interest everyone who has commented. I tend to walk and shoot a lot and therefore I agree that the techs could be improved. I was shooting birds 30 seconds before I spotted this interaction. I am posting the shot before and after the one you saw. They are technically challenged but fun. The first is when the squirrel dug in his front claws and did an arial flip 180 degrees and came up going the other way and the second is a few seconds later to show how far he was from the fox. Who gave up the chase a second later.
Cheers

Very cool! I find it's terribly difficult to get ANY images of foxes much less such an awesome action/behavior shot. Thanks for sharing.

Richard,

great action. Like Jim said a bit more focus on the squirrel would have been great... The poses of both a very nice, because of its contrary direction. That emphasizes the fast movement of the squirrel...

This is fantastic Rick, you did about as well as you could have here from a technical standpoint, use more dof to try and get both sharp and the shutter speed wouldn't have been fast enough to stop the action. A higher iso and you would have noise problems. Anyway, its a fabulous shot, congrats. :toast:
