Datura flowers are a great photographic subject (even if they are hard to find).
Double exposure composite.

Giovanni.

Interesting juxtaposition between the stars and the flowers with a nice title that links it together. Jim I'm sure Giovanni will confirm that the streaks in the sky are due to movement of the stars across the sky in an exposure time measured in minutes possibly hours. Albeit the expoure of the foreground might be considerably shorter.

This has to be one of the most creative images I have seen on this forum in a while. I like the mood and the creativity of this image. Congrats !

Jim and Ian,

yes, as I mentioned in the very first post this is a double exposure composite between a long exposure photo (sorry, I don't have raw data at hand...I guess it was a lot of minutes anyway) and a shorter one, with the streaks being star trails.

I sometimes feel the trails are kind of exaggerated compared to the scene below, what do you think ?

Cool. Very interesting comp and light. Datura are nearly a weed here in the Southwest. I can send you some seeds if you'd like. Is this taken in Europe? If so, I can't help but wonder which continent they're native to. BTW, those ruby accents among the datura are very nice.

Tony,
thanks for the seeds offer.
Yes, it was taken in Liguria, in the North of Italy. It is very sunny here all year round so the plant has good chances to bloom in spring.

I know this plant is a self-seeder and I noticed a lot of ripened pods when I took the photo.
An old lady I met nearby , later on, told me that I could take the pods and use the seeds inside which I did last spring and eventually grown beautifully in four flowering plants. The flowers have the most marvellous perfume I've ever smelt !

Bye,

Giovanni.

Very nice. I especially enjoy the angle.

These things grow like weeds in my backyard, it's a constant battle. A few interesting sidenotes about them; the flowers only open at dusk <> night; and, under no circumstances should you consume any part of this plant. It's highly toxic and hallucinogenic (in a bad, bad way). They also smell just like peanut butter when you cut the stalks.

Hi Kurt,

yes, I knew it has this effects. Every time I touch the seeds or the plant I go wash my hands immediately !

I didn't know the penaut butter thing as I don't know which is its taste or smell (we don't actually know what is it here in Italy but sometimes we hear that in american films or sit-coms).

Now, talking about food: have you ever tasted "Pesto alla Genovese" ? Great ! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pesto)

Thanks for stopping by.

Giovanni.

Very unique perspective and an excellent low light exposure, Giovanni! The petals look like they are generating their own light! Good eye to see this opportunity. :toast:
