Box Elder Bug on Sandstone

This was made with slide film back in '99. In those days, I took in-camera dupes of everything. It wasn't possible in this case because the bug was making a dash for cover. It just paused for a moment at this little edge in the sandstone. I'd framed up the sandstone and waited for the bug to walk into the scene.

Tripod, Nikon F4 with 200/4 macro, probably at f/16.

Pete,
It's not often that you see strong compositions in photos of insects! NIce light, great warm colour, and a very dinamic comp...I think this is a very strong image! Did you crop this at all?....I wish there was just a little more room in the upper right to let that nice curve breathe a little. Great job here!

Looks perfect to me Pete. Terrific comp, exposure, and light. Really neat subject too - love thetextures throughout, including on the bug.

Neat photo, Pete. What an interesting bug. I get the sense of some trepidation here, like the bug is debating with itself whether to leave the safety of sure footing and head over the edge. So along with the great comp and colors and all of that, there's a good dose of suspense as well. Hooray for the archives!

Pete: Congrats on the EP. I missed this earlier. Just a superb capture of the texture of the rock and I especially like the play of light and shadow. Many kudos! >=))>
