Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

This is very similar to another shot I posted which had a gradient BG. Sapwells encircle the truck of this tree from the base to just above the lower limbs.

Canon D30, 100-400IS at 400mm, 5.6, 1/250 sec, +1/3 compensation, tripod and blind.

Thanks for looking. Although I seldom comment on my own posts I just want to let all of you know that I appreciate your comments and suggestions.

The sap wells are great, but what makes this for me is the inquisitive slight turn of the head. Nice, nice, nice.

Very nice Betty. Everytime I set up on one of these they always look so ratty and unkept. This one has every feather in place. The sap wells are a wonderful touch. Great shot!

A perfect shot, I like the saphole details and the pose of the bird. Amazing how they can grip on like they do, the claws are just sitting on the top of the bark.

You have yet another beauty here! The beautiful saturated colors and soft light really bring out the details in the feathers. As others have noted, the sap wells are icing on the cake here.

Betty -

This is to die for!
Outstanding detail and in the bird and the tree trunk. The BG is great too. I like the inclusion of the telltale sign of this species, the rows of sap well holes.

Great work.

Congrats, Betty!

I must have been living in a cave to miss this one the first time around. Beautiful! The sap wells are the icing, but no-one has mentioned my favorite part... I just love the textures at work here, between the back, primaries, breast and tree is a beautiful 'texture sandwich' set off from a perfect background.
