Ryan Alter is a nature photographer who is passionate about putting a different perspective on life. Originally from Brookfield, Ohio, about 10 years ago Alter relocated to Missoula, MT, a place surrounded by awesome beauty.
Alter’s interest in photography was sparked about 10 years ago in a college biology class. A fascinating photo of a wood thrush that he took with a borrowed Canon started Alter on his life venture into photography. Ever since then he has been showing the world the wonders of nature one image at a time.
An avid kayaker, Alter feels he is able to access unusual places in nature and observe wildlife quietly without disturbing its habitat. An Environmental Science major turned technology “guru,” he places great importance on the desire to have his photography preserve nature. As a short-term goal, he envisions photography projects that could help with the protection of endangered species as well as their habitats.
Alter works closely with the Biology Department at the University Of Montana, donating many photos to promote different causes. Alter sees his photography as a response to the environment around him. “Without the beauty of nature, my images would just be pictures.”
