I've been shooting professional nature and landscape photographs for ten years, with seven years experience as a "serious amateur" prior to that. About seven years ago, I made the transition from 35mm to large format (4x5). Since the days of Ansel Adams, the 4x5 negative/transparency has been the "standard of the industry" as far as professional scenic and landscape photography is concerned. With the advent of digital photography a lot has changed, but to my eye, work shot on 4x5 and scanned with a high-density drum scanner still has an edge when it comes to image detail, sharpness, and overall image quality, especially when it comes to large prints (40x50 and larger). I still shoot 35mm on occasion, but the vast majority of my work (about 95%) is 4x5.
At present, my work encompasses the Western United States, with a focus on Arizona and Colorado. The images you see in my online portfolio represent what I consider to be my best, most artistic work. I have hundreds of other images (mostly on 4x5 transparencies) that may interest you. If you're looking for something specific and don't see it in my online portfolio, please ask.
For the past ten years I've been marketing my work at local arts and crafts festivals. The pleasant weather during late fall, winter, and early spring make Phoenix, Arizona (my home) a prime location for outdoor shows. Generally speaking, I'm not all that keen on showing my work in galleries, and I've had good success "taking it right to the public" by doing festivals, street fairs, and shows.
In September 2006, two of my images received a "highly honored" distinction in the Nature's Best 2006 International Photography Awards competition and were published in the fall 2006 issue of Nature's Best magazine. My image entitled "Sandstone Art" (image reference 035/39) was selected in the "Art in Nature" category, and my image entitled "Blue Columbine" (image reference 058/144) was selected in the "Plant Life" category. I’ve also had five images published in Arizona Highways calendars over the past five years.
I have several commercial installations in the Phoenix area including Nautilus Insurance Group (Scottsdale), Mesa Community College (Mesa), Horizon Development (Mesa), and Metro Phoenix Bank.
At present, my print of choice is Fujiflex Crystal Archive. Fujiflex Crystal Archive prints are vibrant, color-rich, super high-gloss photographic prints (not inkjet prints) with a look and feel much like long-standing Ilfochrome/Cibachrome prints, and have an estimated archival life of 60 years (per Fuji). I sell Fujiflex Crystal Archive prints as loose prints, double-matted (acid-free) prints, framed prints, and unframed/laminated prints with museum backs in sizes from 8x10 to 40x50 and larger. I also sell inkjet/giclee prints on canvas stretched over a wooden frame.
I sell my work for stock uses and do commission work. I ship worldwide, and for local customers I offer no-obligation, in-home/in-office presentations. Also, I do proportional computer mock-ups free of charge so it's possible to see how a particular image fits in a given wall space before purchasing. Finally, I offer competitive pricing, wholesale discounts to qualified buyers (galleries, interior decorators, commercial buyers, etc.) and quantity discounts to residential and corporate clients.
