Ruud is a self taught photographer from the Netherlands. Photography is not his main job but, it is his way of channelling his creativity. He was taught the basics of photography by his father at the age of 12 and has been taking pictures ever since. Fifteen years ago Ruud made his home in the UK and has enjoyed living in Bacup for the last 10 years.
Ruud likes images that tell a story. The most interesting ones are those that can tell many stories at the same time. Some of these stories can be true, but none need to be. The images in this portfolio invite the viewer to think about them, wander into them, and make up their own stories. With his photography he tries to surprise; to engage the viewer and make them see beauty where it is not expected.
Travelling is another of Ruud’s passions and helps him to find new subject material. He is in the fortunate position of being able to travel for work and endeavours to combine business trips with his love of photography. Being able to observe and participate in other cultures (something he had to do after moving to the UK!) gives him a useful perspective on what could easily be dismissed by some as ‘strange’ or even ‘inferior’.
