Lower Antelope Canyon is called Hasdestwazi, or "spiral rock arches." But many of the elders believe it to be the home of the wind gods and actually frown on the practice of tourism in this place. Religion and capitalism find themselves at odds with the modern Navajo who are an independent people that do not rely on the government for handouts.
I, for one, am happy and honored to be able to spend time in such a magical place and bring back photos which I hope help to do it justice. As landscape photographers, we sometimes find ourselves balancing a fine line between getting the shot and protecting the resource. I guess what I mean to say is to remember to be respectful and tread lightly whether you find yourself at a national park or private area.
