Long-legged Waders

Keywords: egret, wading, water, silhouette, crayfish, crawdad

I saw this egret working the edge of a pond as I was photographing in New Jersey’s Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. I parked myself by the small pond and remained still for quite a while after seeing the egret on the other side. I know that egrets and herons tend to walk along the edge and when they are looking for food they don’t pay much attention to anything else. I was hoping this one would come toward me and it did, occasionally poking its head in the water and coming up empty. The sun was getting low and the egret walked into an area that gave me a good silhouette. Then it jabbed into the water again and came up with a crayfish and I had my shot.
